Uganda Cranes regroup for 2016 CHAN qualifier against Tanzania

Xinhua, June 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Uganda's national football team, known as the Crane, on Friday regrouped ahead of their return leg against Tanzania in a 2016 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier.

After winning the first leg 3-0 last weekend in Zanzibar, Uganda only need a draw on July 4 to qualify for the final phase of the CHAN qualifiers.

Head Coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic told Xinhua that he will not take the Tanzania side for granted because they lost the first leg.

"We want to continue working hard because we have several matches to go. We need to make sure we beat Tanzania in-front of our home fans so that we qualify for the last round," said Sredojevic.

Erisa Ssekisambu and Farouk Miya who scored in the Cranes first leg win are part of the squad that started training on Friday.

The coach called upon Ugandans to come in large numbers to support the team when they face Tanzania.

"Ugandans should not take it for granted that we have qualified because football is a funny sport and anything can happen," added the Serbian.

Skipper Hassan Wasswa Mawanda, a former professional player based in Turkey, said they will work hard to make sure they qualify for a third straight CHAN event.

Uganda took part in the 2011 and 2014 events in Sudan and South Africa respectively.

The Cranes will next face Sudan in October if they manage to eliminate Tanzania. The CHAN tournament is meant for players featuring in their home leagues. Endi
