Cuba develops vaccine against cholera

Xinhua, June 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Cuban-made vaccine against cholera was in the second stage of clinical development and the results of the tests were very good, a researcher said here on Thursday.

The oral vaccine contains a live subdued microorganism as an active ingredient, according to Rafael Fando, director of the National Center for Scientific Investigation (CNIC).

This ingredient facilitates the products entry into the gastrointestinal tract to generate a protective immune response against cholera, Fando told Cuban news agency Prensa Latina during the International Scientific Congress at Havana's Convention Palace.

"The future vaccine will be most useful to countries with little economic resources to fight the cholera epidemic," said the doctor.

Around 300 investigators, more than 60 Cuban institutions and about 250 scholars from over 30 nations attended the 16th edition of the CNIC's International Scientific Congress which will close on Friday. Endi
