Australia's postal service to axe 1,900 jobs due to emails

Xinhua, June 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The rapid decline of traditional letters due to emails has led Australia Post to announce 1,900 job cuts over the next three years, it was announced on Friday.

The decline in the traditional letter delivery service is rapidly accelerating, leading to the decision.

It was widely reported on Friday the 1,900 jobs would be shed via voluntary redundancies in metropolitan centers.

Australia Post has confirmed losses in its mail delivery business are approaching 500 million Australian dollars (387 million U.S. dollars) this financial year.

The volume of ordinary mail expected to fall by more than 10 percent, and Australia Post has warned it will report its first company-wide financial loss in more than 30 years.

Australia Post managing director Ahmed Fahour admitted the decline in the mail deliveries is now critical.

"We have reached the tipping point that we have been warning about where, without reform, the business becomes unsustainable," Fahour said. Endi
