20 Thai provinces remain affected by drought

Xinhua, June 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

A drought crisis continues to affect 20 provinces in Thailand, despite improvement reported in 20 others, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation ( DDPM) said Thursday.

Water shortages are still affecting more than 7,000 communities in 20 provinces, most of which are located in the upper part of the kingdom and some in the east, according to DDPM Director- General Chatchai Promlert.

Provincial authorities and the army have strained to provide assistance to drought-hit areas, with water being delivered to villages for household consumption and farming activities, Chatchai said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation has reportedly planned to divert less water into households due to less-than-expected rainfall and consequently insufficiently replenished water supplies in dams and reservoirs, while urging the public to conserve water during the dry season. Endi
