Afghan anti-drug police seize drugs in eastern province

Xinhua, June 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

The special anti-drug police personnel have seized an illicit drug-packed vehicle in eastern province of Nangarhar, the Afghan Interior Ministry said on Thursday.

"Anti-Narcotic Police Force of Interior Ministry uncovered and seized some 374 kg heroin in Behsud district of Nangarhar province on Wednesday," the ministry said in a statement.

The police detained a suspected man in addition to confiscating the truck in the province with Jalalabad as its capital, 120 km east of Afghan capital of Kabul.

The suspect tried to carry the seized drugs to Kabul, the statement noted.

The seizure took place two days before the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which falls on Friday, June 26.

The Afghan government, with the support of the international community, has been fighting hard to eliminate poppy cultivation in the country. However, according to the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), Afghanistan remains as the world's largest poppy producing nation. Endi
