Former UN official named advisor to Secretary-General Ban on peace operations

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Tuesday appointed Louise Frechette of Canada, who was the world body's first deputy secretary-general, to work as his advisor on peace operations, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters here.

"The secretary-general received the report of the High-level Implementation Panel on Peace Operations last week," Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here. "He will be studying the panel's work closely as he prepares his own recommendations to the General Assembly and the Security Council."

"To that end, he has asked Louise Frechette of Canada to advise him in the drafting of his report, which is expected to be ready for the 70th session" of the 193-member General Assembly, which is to open in New York City in September.

In this capacity, Frechette will work with member states and the UN system as well other interested parties.

Starting 1997, Frechette, born in July 1946 in Montreal, served as the UN's first deputy secretary-general for eight years. She is also an expert on peace operations and has served as the deputy minister of defense in Canada. Endite
