UN chief calls on youth to dedicate to public service

Xinhua, June 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

On Public Service Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday called on young people to consider dedicating themselves to the cause of public service.

"The world faces enormous social, economic and environmental challenges," said Ban. "Ensuring that our public services are accountable and that our public servants are fully able to rise to the moment is vital."

Noting that the UN is going to adopt a new set of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in September, Ban also said governments everywhere will need to promote policy change, institutional coordination, participatory decision-making, and effective, responsive, inclusive and accountable service delivery.

This year, the United Nations, as the world's leading organization in the field of public service, is going to adopt the post-2015 development which includes the SDGs to guide the development of the international community in the following 15 years.

Besides, the UN is also going to promote the adoption of a universal climate change agreement in the Paris conference in December.

These milestone events will "help generate momentum for strengthening leadership in public services," said Ban.

The UN General Assembly designated June 23 as Public Service Day to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community and highlight the contribution of public service in the development process. Endite
