According to Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) estimates released on Monday, Switzerland's population will reach 10.2 million residents by 2045.
The 2045 estimation represents a 2 million increase compared to the country's 2014 permanent resident population. This represents a 0.7 percent annual population increase over the next 30 years.
Based on hypotheses conducted by Swiss federal administration experts, the confederation's socio-economic and political development will play an important role in defining future demographic trends, which is why various scenarios were drawn out to establish a reference estimate.
The higher growth scenario, which supposes higher migratory flows combined with increased fertility rates and a life expectancy increasing faster than expected, estimates that the population will reach 11 million by 2045, while the lower growth scenario sets the 2045 population at 9.4 million individuals.
Based on existing trends, FSO indicates that migration will be the main driver behind population growth, accounting for over 80 percent of population increase.
An ageing population, combined with a surplus of births over deaths will also contribute to Switzerland's population increase.
According to FSO, though the number of 0-19 and 20-64 year olds is expected to rise but marginally in Switzerland in the coming decades, the number of residents aged 65 or above will increase by around 84 percent, passing from 1.5 million at the end of 2014 to 2.7 million in 2045.
Correlating population growth, the working population is also set to rise, reaching 5.3 million in 2045, while as much as 57 percent of 25-64 year-olds will have attended tertiary level education, compared to 24 percent in 2000. Endit
