Burundi grenade attacks leave 4 killed, 28 injured

Xinhua, June 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Four persons were killed Sunday night and 28 others injured in separate grenade attacks that targeted bars in Burundi's northern provinces of Ngozi and Kirundo, Burundian police told Xinhua on Monday.

"Four persons died and 27 others were injured in a grenade explosion inside a bar where people were drinking local beer at Burengo in Ngozi town while another grenade detonated in a bar at Runanira in Kirundo town, seriously injuring one person," said Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye.

According to Nkurikiye, both grenade attacks happened almost at the same time at about 20:30 (18:30 GMT) although they took place in different provinces.

Nkurikiye indicated that two persons have been arrested in connection with the grenade attack at Burengo in Ngozi province.

The police spokesman also indicated that gunmen opened fire on Sunday night around 23:00 (21:00 GMT) near a police post at Mugoboka in Rohero urban commune in the Burundian capital Bujumbura.

"The attack that occurred near a police post at Mugoboka did not make any human casualties," said Nkurikiye.

He said that the roof of a house located near the police post was partly damaged.

"Investigations have been launched to identify the attackers," added Nkurikiye.

At least 11 policemen were injured on Friday in grenade attacks that targeted police posts in various neighborhoods of the east African country's capital Bujumbura.

Grenade attacks have intensified mainly in the capital Bujumbura ahead of the country's elections, with the first polls -- the legislative and communal elections -- due on June 29. Endi
