Sri Lanka's opposition concerned over Tamil Tiger funding

Xinhua, June 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sri Lanka's main opposition on Monday raised concerns over a U.S. report which claims the Tamil Tiger rebel international network of sympathizers and financial support still persists.

Former foreign minister and United People's Freedom Alliance ( UPFA) parliamentarian, G.L Peiris said Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should have convened a special cabinet meeting to discuss the report.

He said the U.S. report had noted that some Sri Lankan diaspora groups are collecting funds to purchase weapons for the rebels who were defeated in 2009 after 30 years of war.

"The government should act on this urgently. There is a threat to national security," Peiris said.

The annual Country Report on Terrorism for 2014, which was released last Friday by the U.S. State Department, noted that despite its military defeat by the Sri Lankan government in 2009, the Tamil Tiger international network of sympathizers and financial support still persists. Endi
