Turkey's new parliament due to convene on Tuesday

Xinhua, June 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Turkey's Supreme Election Board (YSK) on Thursday announced the final results of the June 7 general election, prompting the new parliament to convene on Tuesday, private Dogan news agency reported.

According to results, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) received 40.66 percent of the votes, the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) 25.13 percent, the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) 16.45 percent, and the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) 12.96 percent.

The AKP will have 258 seats in the 550-seat parliament, the CHP 132 seats, and the MHP and the HDP both 80 seats.

As none of the four parties has the necessary majority to form a single-party government, they are forced to negotiate to form some type of coalition following the opening of parliament with the ceremonial oath-taking by MPs later this month.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to ask the AKP to form a government.

Turkey's constitution stipulates that a new government must be formed within 45 days following the president's demand. If no government is formed, the country will have to hold early parliamentary elections. Endit
