UN General Assembly to assign international day for ending sexual violence in conflict

Xinhua, June 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN General Assembly is expected to adopt a resolution declaring June 19 as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, Farhan Haq, the deputy UN spokesman, told reporters here Thursday.

"Tomorrow, there will be a special event in the General Assembly Hall related to sexual violence in conflict," Haq said at a daily news briefing here. "All UN staff and journalists are invited to attend."

"The event will follow the morning General Assembly plenary session, which is expected to approve a new resolution making 19 June the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict," he said.

The move will focus on raising awareness, standing in solidarity with the survivors, and paying tribute to those working to end sexual violence in conflict.

The United Nations has been long condemning sexual violence in conflict, and called for joint international efforts to put an early end to such illegal practices and violations of human rights. Endite
