EU receives 185,000 asylum seekers in Q1

During the first three months, 185,000 first time asylum seekers applied for protection in the European Union (EU), up by 86 percent compared with the first quarter of 2014, Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU issued Thursday.

People from Kosovo represent the main citizenship of first time asylum applicants in the EU over the first quarter, ahead of Syrians and Afghans, with the number of applicants reaching almost 50,000.

Ninety percent of the Kosovos who applied for asylum in the EU in the first quarter were recorded in Hungary and Germany.

During the first quarter, the highest numbers of first time applicants in the EU was registered in Germany, amounting to 40 percent of total applicants, which was followed by Hungary, Italy and France. Endit
