Spanish police arrest 18 over fight which leads to death of Deportivo fan

Xinhua, June 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Spanish police made a series of arrests on Wednesday in connection with the fight between 'ultra' supporters of Atletico Madrid and Deportivo la Coruna which led to the death of a Deportivo fan, Javier Romero Taboarda on Nov. 30 last year.

Taborda died after being thrown into the River Manzanares close to Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderon Stadium during the fight which happened at around 9am, three hours before the game kicked off.

The 18 people were arrested on Wednesday, all of them thought to be members of Atletico's 'Frente Atletico' supporters group, a well-known organization with strong right-wing learnings.

Two of those arrested have been charged with homicide and are thought to have been directly involved in Taborda's death, while the remained are expected to be changed with public order offenses.

The incident happened after the Frente Atletico and members of Deportivo's 'Riazor Blues': which has a left-wing ideology had arranged to meet and fight alongside the river before the match between the two sides.

'Operation Neptune' as the police investigation is called, has been helped by the fact that many people living close to the Manzanares were disturbed by the noise of the fight, which many of them filmed on mobile phones before handing the videos over to help the police. Endi
