The Bulgarian government on Wednesday decided to send the frigate Drazki (Daring) to participate in NATO's antiterrorist operation Active Endeavour in the Mediterranean Sea, officials said.
The frigate with its 153-member crew would join the operation in the periods Oct 12-16 and Nov. 7-17 this year, the government said in a press release.
The Bulgarian vessel would be involved in the monitoring of the shipping traffic, the government said.
Under Operation Active Endeavour, NATO ships are patrolling the Mediterranean and monitoring shipping to help deter, defend, disrupt and protect against terrorist activity.
The operation evolved out of NATO's immediate response to the terrorist attacks against the United States of Sept. 11, 2001, and, in view of its success, is being continued.
Bulgaria, a NATO member since 2004, participated for the first time in Active Endeavour operation in 2005. Endit
