22 killed in road mishap in southern India

Xinhua, June 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 22 people, including eight women and seven children, were killed in a major bus crash in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh early Saturday, a senior police official said.

"The mishap happened when a van in which the victims, mostly pilgrims, were traveling plunged nearly 30 feet into Dowleswaram barrage near Rajahmundry in the state's East Godavari district, after the driver lost control of the vehicle," he said on condition of anonymity.

While 22 people were killed on the spot, a 12-year-old child miraculously survived with minor injuries and has been admitted to a local hospital, he said, adding the victims were returning to their homes in Achyutapuram district from the temple town of Tirupati.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief at the incident. "Loss of lives due to a bus accident in East Godavari district, AP is saddening & unfortunate. My deepest condolences," he tweeted.

A probe has been launched into the incident. Endi
