The deputy UN secretary- general, Jan Eliasson, will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, Friday to represent UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the 25th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit, which will take place on June 14-15, a UN spokesman announced here Thursday.

"On Saturday, the deputy secretary-general will participate in the Meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here. "During his visit, he will meet with officials of the African Union Commission, as well as Heads of Delegations of Member States attending the Summit."

The United Nations has enjoyed close cooperation with the African Union in maintaining peace and security and boosting development in Africa.

South Africa has made all arrangements and created conducive conditions for a productive and most successful African Union Summit, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said Monday.

The 25th African Union summit will feature the theme "Year of Women empowerment and Development towards Africa's Agenda 2063."

"South Africa is ready to welcome the African Union and the leaders of the continent. We have made available all necessary arrangements for fruitful discussions," she said. "We are ready as a country to also take up our seat amongst the other member states of the African Union and make a contribution towards a united, prosperous, peaceful, democratic, nonracial and non-sexist Africa. "

She said the summit will give the African Union time to reflect on how far it has gone towards achieving the continental body's founding objectives that include attaining unity, peace, socioeconomic integration and working with relevant international partners in the eradication of preventable diseases and promotion of good health on the continent.
