Spain has experienced its hottest May temperatures for over 50 years according to figures published on Wednesday.
The data published by 'eltiempo.es' shows that the average May temperature was 18.6 degrees centigrade, just a tenth of a degree cooler than the previous high, which was experienced in May 1964.
Not only was the average the highest in 50 years, but several important cities experienced their highest May temperatures ever. That was the case of Valencia as the east coast city saw a 5.8 degree increase on the highest May temperature ever recorded.
The cities of Avila and Murcia also witnessed record highs, with Murcia reaching 43.4 degrees centigrade: 3.5 percent higher than the previous record of 39.9 set in 2006, while Avila's high peaked at 33 degrees, 2.4 degrees up on the 2006 record of 30.6 degrees.
Meanwhile the cities of Girona, Granada and Jaen all saw their highest ever average maximum temperature for the month, with Girona registering an average of 26.7 degrees, Granada 30.7 degrees and Jaen, 29.1.
The month was accompanied by lower than average rainfall in all areas of the country, which will raise the risk of forest fires, a habitual problem in Spain over the summer. Endit
