An Army major was shot dead by a lone gunman while shopping with his wife on Monday night in south Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, military officials said Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Ibno Kalid Hassan, was buying foodstuff for their child confined at a hospital in Pagadian city when the incident occurred, according to the military.

Hassan was one of the hundreds of former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels integrated into the Armed Forces as part of the peace agreement signed by the MNLF and the government in 1996.

Audie Mongao, public affairs officer of the Army's 1st Infantry Division, said Hassan was shot dead by an unidentified suspect, armed with a cal. 45 pistol at around 7 p.m. Monday.

"The victim sustained gunshot wounds on his back that exited his right chest, center chest, and lower arm which resulted to his untimely death," said Mongao of Hassan who was in civilian clothes and unarmed at that time.

Mongao said the suspect fled on foot. Investigators are still establishing the identity of the suspect and his motive of the killing. Endi
