Quake jolts central Greece, no casualties

Xinhua, June 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake jolted central Greece early Tuesday, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.

No injuries or damage have been reported so far. The tremor's epicenter is about 80 km northwest of Athens. The depth of the quake is 13 km below the sea, near the town of Larimna.

Preliminary estimates by the EuroMediterranean Seismic Institute gave a 5 magnitude, but Athens Observatory seismologists revised it upward.

Greek experts suggested calm, noting that the quake was followed by several aftershocks. Scientists do not see particular reasons for concern. Quake-prone Greece is often hit by tremors, but in most cases they cause no major damage. Endi
