Russian president to visit Azerbaijan

Xinhua, June 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit Azerbaijan later this week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told media Monday.

Putin "will first visit Italy and then travel to Azerbaijan towards the weekend," Peskov said. Early in March Peskov said he did not rule out Putin's visit to Azerbaijan to attend the inaugural European Games in Baku.

Meanwhile, the official personal assistant of the Russian President Yuri Ushakov told media in Moscow that Putin is expected to hold a number of meetings in Baku during his visit on June 12- 13.

According to Ushakov, Putin will attend the opening ceremony of the first European Games in Baku. The Russian president is also expected to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach. On June 13, Putin will meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

The two presidents will reportedly discuss development of Russian-Azerbaijani relations and the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over the Nagorno Karabakh.

Some 360 athletes will represent Russia at the first ever European Games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent, which will take place on June 1228, 2015 in Baku. There will be a total of 20 sports -- 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. Almost 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their countries over the 17-day competition. Endite
