Slovak city of Kosice named European Capital of Sport for 2016

Xinhua, June 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Kosice has been named the European capital for sport for 2016 by the European Capitals of Sport Association (ACES Europe), announced Kosice mayor Richard Rasi after learning of the official decision by ACES Europe President Gian Francesco Lupattelli on Monday.

"We congratulate you on the title because your city is a really good example that sport is an instrument of health, integration, education, and respect for all. These are ACES Europe's main goals," Lupattelli wrote in a letter.

The city also held the title of European capital of culture in 2013.

According to Rasi, with it's new title, Kosice will attempt to attract as many people as possible to engage in sporting activities. Rasi stated that those in social need would be able to take part in sports for free at the city's facilities, while the local authority would also make it easier for the disabled and elderly to participate in sport.

The main sporting events in Kosice in 2016 will include the International Peace Marathon, several urban runs, a swimming relay contest, the Kosice-Tatry-Kosice cycle race, the dance sport world championships, basketball's Euroleague, FIVB Volleyball World League, and FINA Water Polo World League.
