China issues plan to improve village teachers' capability

Xinhua, June 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

China will push to improve and increase the number of village teachers, according to a recently published five-year plan.

The General Office of the State Council published a plan to address the short-comings of China's education system in rural and remote areas of western and central regions.

The plan said the issue was of strategic importance and should be addressed with comprehensive efforts. It is aimed at building a capable and dedicated teaching staff for rural areas.

It called for improvement of professional ethics and new channels for recruiting village teachers.

Living standards for those teaching in rural areas should also be raised.

The document stipulated more favorable policies for village teachers concerning professional ranks, training and an honor system.

It urged local governments to implement the measures while strengthening input and supervision. Endi
