Syrian forces and allied fighters dislodged the Islamic State (IS) militants from areas they stormed in the northern city of Hasaka, the state news agency SANA reported Sunday.

Tens of IS militants were killed by the military operation in the southern countryside of the predominantly Kurdish city of Hasaka, said the report, adding that the government troops regained control of several areas the IS had recently stormed. (Syria-IS)

ISLAMABAD -- At least five people were killed when some unknown gunmen opened fire at a shop in Pakistan's southwest Quetta city on Sunday afternoon, local media reported.

Dunya TV said that the gunmen riding motorbikes fired at the shop located in Meezan Chowk area of Quetta, the capital city of the country's southwest Balochistan province. (Pakistan-Gunmen-Attack)

KUALA LUMPUR -- Sixteen bodies have been recovered by the search and rescue team on Malaysia's Mount Kinabalu after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the eastern Sabah state, one of which carried a Chinese passport, the Chinese Consulate in Kota Kinabalu said on Sunday.

The consulate said the bodies will be officially identified by the forensic experts and the police, and the Chinese mission will cooperate with the work of the Malaysian side by providing information and give support to the next-of-kins of the missing Chinese national. (Malaysia-Quake)

SEOUL -- Twenty-four hospitals relevant to the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) infection in South Korea were disclosed Sunday as 14 more cases were reported mostly in the capital Seoul.

Fourteen people were confirmed positive for the viral disease on Sunday alone, the fastest daily increase since the patient zero was tested positive on May 20, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. (S. Korea-MERS)

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan -- A bomb blast that rocked Kunduz city, capital of northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province, claimed the life of a prosecutor on Sunday, said Abdul Wadod, the spokesman for the provincial government.

"Unknown insurgents planted explosive device on the car of prosecutor Mohammad Halim that exploded at around 10:00 a.m. local time killing him on the spot," Wadod told reporters here. (Afghanistan-Blast) Endi
