Singapore declares memorial day for victims in Malaysia's quake

Xinhua, June 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore's Prime Minister's Office announced on Sunday that Monday will be a Day of National Remembrance for the eight Singaporeans killed and two still missing in Malaysia's Sabah earthquake.

State flags on all government buildings will be flown at half- mast and a minute's silence will be observed at the beginning of the day at all SEA Games venues, said PMO in the announcement.

Six of the dead were students from Tanjong Katong Primary School, while one is a teacher. Another student and a teacher from the primary school are still missing.

A Singaporean adventure guide, who was with the students on an expedition to Mount Kinabalu at the time of the earthquake, was also killed.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department said the 5.9 magnitude earthquake, which occurred at 7:15 a.m. local time, is centered 16 km northwest of Ranau, Sabah with a depth of 54 km. Endi
