Iraqi security forces on Saturday repelled attacks by the Islamic State (IS) militants, including suicide car bombers, in the western province of Anbar, security sources said.

The troops and allied militias, known as Hashd Shaabi or Popular Mobilization, were backed by U.S.-led coalition aircraft. They thwarted an IS attack in Nadhim al-Taqseem area, north of the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, killing 17 IS militants and destroyed four suicide car bombs, an Interior Ministry spokesman said in a statement. DHAKA -- After dillydallying for decades, New Delhi has finally exchanged instruments of ratification of land boundary agreement with Dhaka.

CAIRO -- The Cairo Appeal Court for Urgent Matters canceled a previous verdict labeling Palestinian Hamas group as a terror organization, official Ahram Online website reported on Saturday.

The court accepted an appeal filed by the State Litigation Authority, which represents the Egyptian government, against the verdict that a lower court had issued on Feb. 28 designating Islamic movement as a terrorist organization. (Egypt-Hamas-Court)

KHARTOUM -- Two Russian pilots kidnapped in Sudan's Darfur region in February were freed on Saturday, according to local official sources.

"They have been freed and are on their way to Khartoum (the capital of Sudan)," an official source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity, without giving more details on how they were released. (Darfur-Russia-Pilots)

KUALA LUMPUR -- The death toll rose to 19 on Malaysia's Mount Kinabalu after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Malaysia's eastern Sabah state, Malaysian English newspaper The Star quoted local officials as saying on Saturday.

WASHINGTON -- A U.S. man who admitted trying to join the Islamic State (IS) was sentenced to 82 months in prison on Friday, the U.S. Justice Department said in a statement.
