Modi embarks on two-day visit to Bangladesh to boost ties

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived in Bangladesh for a two-day visit to the neighboring country.

"During his visit, Modi will hold talks with Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, opposition leader Raushon Ershad and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia," sources said.

The visit is aimed at bolstering bilateral trade ties between the two countries, which stand at 5.34 billion U.S. dollars, and strengthening the railway connectivity in Bangladesh, the sources said.

Modi, Chief Minister of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee who is also in the country for a visit and Hasina will also flag off two bus services between the two countries.

The first bus service will run from West Bengal's capital Kolkata to the northeastern state of Tripura's capital Agartala via Dhaka and the second from Dhaka to Shillong and Guwahati in northeastern India.

This is Modi's first visit to Bangladesh since he came to power in May last year. Endi
