Death toll rises to 19 on Malaysia's Mount Kinabalu after quake: officials

Xinhua, June 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Death Toll rose to 19 on Malaysia's Mount Kinabalu after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Malaysia's eastern Sabah state, Malaysian English newspaper The Star quoted local officials as saying on Saturday.

It quoted search and rescue officials as saying that no more bodies were expected to be found as all the missing climbers have been accounted for.

They said that the bodies were being carried out by helicopters and being flown to Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah.

While the identities of those killed can only be released after post mortem, it is believed that at least 10 people who died in the quake were students from an international school of Singapore.

The state government declared Monday a day of mourning to those suffered from the earthquake, and all the departments and agencies are required to fly the national and state flags at half-mast.

The national-level Kaamatan festival on Sunday is also canceled due to the earthquake. Endi
