Kenyans on Friday reacted with hope and expectation after Commonwealth Games javelin champion Julius Yego's performance in Rome Diamond League with another national record throw on Thursday night.
Yego's performance this season has inspired fans to imagine how far he can hurl the javelin, and if at all, he will retain the same top form and bid for a medal at the World Championships in Beijing in August.
David Okeyo, Athletics Kenya Vice President, said in Nairobi that Yego is basking at the crest of his career wave and will be the man to beat the World Championships in Beijing.
"He is good. Look how he does his business and you can't refuse to like it. He will do well in Beijing," he said. "In Rome, he was the fans favourite and Beijing better watch out, a Kenyan will win a medal in javelin."
Just days after winning in Ostrava Golden Spikes meeting in Czech Republic, Yego has continued to redefine his career ever since he stormed the global scene.
In Rome, he was second to Vitezslav Vesely (88.14 metres). Yego launched his spear out to Kenyan record of 87.71m in round four, adding 85cm to his own mark set a week ago in Ostrava.
In the final round, Trinidad and Tobago's Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott also unleashed a national record of 86.20m.
"With each improvement, he is getting top of the standings and will be a real threat to the Scandinavian athletes in Beijing. Kenya can surely take a medal in javelin," said Okeyo.
Yego finished fourth in Moscow World Championships in 2013 and is certain he will make the medal bracket in Beijing. Endi
