Cambodia has appealed to its laborers working in South Korea to be vigilant over the outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), a spokesman said Friday.
MERS has hit South Korea since last month, killing four people in 41 infected cases. "Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong has ordered the Cambodian Ambassador to South Korea to urgently advise Cambodian laborers, students and expatriates staying in South Korea to be highly vigilant so as to prevent themselves from infecting with MERS,"Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said in a statement.
There are currently over 35,000 Cambodians working in South Korea in the fields of manufacturing, construction and agriculture.
MERS is a viral respiratory disease caused by a novel Coronavirus that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. So far, more than 1,100 cases of MERS infections have been reported globally with 442 deaths, the World Health Organization said, adding that the virus can transmit from an infected person to another in close contact.
