In Britain, 11,842 ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs) were registered between January and May, a sharp rise on the 2,838 registrations in the same period last year, data released on Thursday showed.
British overall new car sales went up 2.4 percent in May year-on-year to 198,706 units, marking the 39th consecutive month of growth, said the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
"The remarkable growth in demand for plug in vehicles is expected to continue as the range of ultra low emission vehicles on sale increases. Meanwhile, we anticipate a natural levelling out of the overall new car market throughout the remainder of 2015," said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive.
Ford Fiesta was on the top of the best sellers , with 9,349 units being sold in May. Other best sellers included Ford Focus, Vauxhall Corsa, Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra, etc..
A ULEV is a vehicle which produces 75g or less of CO2 per kilometer from the tailpipe. Currently all ULEVs are plug-in vehicles, according to SMMT. Endit
