Denmark's Maersk Line, the world's biggest container-shipping company by capacity, confirmed on Tuesday that it had ordered 11 ultra-large container ships for 1.8 billion U.S. dollars from South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).
The 11 so-called Triple-E ships will be the largest in Maersk Line's fleet with a length of 400 meters and a width of 58.6 meters.
"These vessels will help us stay competitive in the Asia-Europe trade and will be key in our strategy to grow with the market," said Soeren Toft, Chief Operating Officer in Maersk Line, in a statement.
The new vessels, each with a capacity of 19,630 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent), are intended for the Asia-Europe service and are expected to be delivered between April 2017 and May 2018.
This is the second new-building order in Maersk Line's investment program, following the seven 3,600 TEU feeder vessels announced earlier this year.
In addition to the 11 new Triple-E ships, Maersk Line has also secured an option on six more ships of the same type.
Maersk Line said it is planning to invest 15 billion dollars in new-buildings, retrofitting, containers and other equipment over the coming five years. Enditem
