Thailand's National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has set the first hearing of the impeachment case against 248 former members of parliament (MPs) on June 26, NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai said Tuesday.
The impeachment motion was filed by the National Anti- Corruption Commission (NACC) against the MPs for their role in passing a charter amendment to change the composition of the Senate in September 2013. The amendment was later ruled unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court.
The accused MPs could defend themselves in groups or individually, and the process is expected to be time-consuming, Pornpetch was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying.
The NLA members and these politicians will receive copies of the NACC's impeachment petition 15 days in advance.
If impeached, the ex-MPs would be banned from politics for five years.
Earlier in March, 38 former senators, faced with similar accusations, survived an impeachment as the NLA failed to get the required number of votes in favor. Endi
