Nigeria's president to visit Chad, Niger over Boko Haram issue

Xinhua, June 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari will on Wednesday and Thursday visit Niger and Chad against the backdrop of renewed attacks by the Boko Haram sect.

Spokesperson to the Nigerian leader Garba Shehu said in a statement reaching Xinhua on Tuesday that his boss would travel to Chad and Niger for talks on the Boko Haram menace.

The two-day trip will focus on matters of security, Shehu added, noting that Nigeria needs the cooperation of its neighbors to succeed in its campaign against the terrorist sect whose activities have so far claimed an estimated over 15,000 lives since 2009.

This will be the President's first official visit outside the country since assuming office.

Nigerian troops have been battling to crush the militants in the last stronghold in the Sambisa Forest, with air raids and ground attacks that have destroyed more than 20 camps and freed hundreds of captive girls, women and children. Endi
