Saudi Arabia appoints ambassador to Iraq

Xinhua, June 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Saudi Arabia named on Tuesday its first resident ambassador to Iraq since 1991 after months of negotiations, according to Al Arabiya News.

Thamer bin Sabhan Al Sabhan, along with diplomats from other countries, took the oath on Tuesday before Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Sabhan was the military attaché in the Saudi Embassy in Lebanon.

The new appointment signals improvement in relations between the two countries after the formation of the new Iraqi government under Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in September 2014.

The Saudi Embassy in Iraq has remained closed since 1991 when Iraq invaded Kuwait, while diplomatic ties were limited to the follow-up of cases of Saudi prisoners in Iraq. Endit
