Sudanese president pardons armed rebels

Xinhua, June 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Tuesday announced the pardoning of the armed rebels who are fighting the central government, shortly after he took the constitutional oath for a new presidential term.

"Today we announce full pardoning for the arms rebels who are willing to return to the homeland, and I invite them to participate in the comprehensive dialogue," said al-Bashir in an address after he was sworn in at the parliament.

He said peace is his top priority in the new presidential term, adding that "this is a new era whose title is the comprehensive peace in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile."

Al-Bashir, who is the chairman of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), achieved a landslide victory in the presidential polls in April, obtaining 94.5 percent of the votes.

His party won the largest number of votes in the legislative elections to enjoy the majority of the seats in the National Assembly (parliament). Endit
