Alcohol causes one sixth of early deaths in Slovakia

As many as one sixth of early and violent deaths in Slovakia is due to alcohol, according to a survey conducted by researchers at Jessenius Medical Faculty of Comenius University in Northern Slovakia.

As for the cause of death, alcohol poisoning as the sole cause was detected in 4 percent of all autopsies.

Lubomir Straka of the institute added that the second most frequent cause of sudden and early death associated with alcohol was traffic accidents, most often involving intoxicated pedestrians.

"Also frequent are falls, drowning, hypothermia and collisions with trains," said Straka.

In addition, the researchers found that another group that faces increased risk is made up of people who become aggressive when drunk. They often turn their aggression towards themselves, committing suicide, or become the victims of homicides.

A team of researchers from the faculty's forensic medicine institute assessed the outcomes of a total of 14,161 autopsies of people who suffered sudden and early deaths over a period of 20 years. Severe levels of intoxication by alcohol were detected in as many as 2,317 cases out of the total. Endit
