Xinhua, June 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

France sold fewer new cars in May compared with the same month a year earlier, the first decline since the start of the year, French car sales federation (CCFA) said on Monday.

At the end of May, car manufacturers sold 143,059 units across France, down from 148,951 vehicles the same month last year.

Sales of French home-made brands fell by 8.8 percent mainly due to the drop in PSA Peugeot sales. France's leading car maker sold 12.8 percent fewer cars to 41,095 units due to sharp drop in the DS brand.

As for the Renault group, the country's second largest auto manufacturer saw its sales dropping by 3.1 percent after providing 32,560 new units, the CCFA added in a statement.

Foreign brands showed a growing trend and sold 69,354 vehicles to the 66 million strong market.

With the aim to breathe life into the sluggish auto industry, the French government unveiled series of measures to bolster production of environmentally-friendly vehicles. Endit
