South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday embarked on a mission aimed at cementing lasting peace in South Sudan, the Presidency said.

The tour first took Ramaphosa to Nairobi, Kenya from where he will proceed to Juba, South Sudan, his spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said.

In Nairobi, Ramaphosa is expected to meet with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, attend Kenya's National Day celebrations.

Ramaphosa, in his capacity as Special Envoy of President Jacob Zuma, will then go to Juba on Monday where he will hold meetings with President Salva Kirr and members of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) Politburo.

The visit comes against the background of efforts aimed at cementing lasting peace in South Sudan, building upon the Reunification Agreement signed in Arusha Tanzania early this year.

The agreement, signed by the various factions of the SPLM, seeks to address the political, organisational and leadership issues that caused the political crisis in the ruling party and South Sudan in general. Endi
