Member of Libyan Islamist-backed parliament found dead

Xinhua, June 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

A member of the Libyan Islamist-backed parliament General National Congress (GNC) was found dead Sunday following his kidnapping 10 days ago, according to a security source.

Salem Al-Himmali, a member of the outgoing GNC, was kidnapped by an unknown group on May 21 whilst traveling to his home town Tarhuna.

"An individual reported an unidentified dead body in the southern capital of Tripoli. When security forces showed up on the scene, they discovered the body belonged to Salem Al-Himmali, a member of the General National Congress, kidnapped 10 days ago in the southern suburbs of Tripoli," the source told Xinhua.

The source had no further details to provide regarding the incident or exact location of the body.

Libya witnessed a frayed political process since the 2011 turmoil which toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi, and is now juggling two rival parliaments, the secular internationally-recognized House of Representatives, along with the Tripoli-based Islamist-backed GNC.

Islamist militants and pro-secular Libyan national army supporting both parliaments have been vying for cities and towns for months, with clashes still ongoing near major cities such as Benghazi and Tripoli. Endit
