Turkish doctors to stage nationwide strike on Monday

Xinhua, May 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Turkish doctors will stage a nationwide strike on Monday to protest the violent acts against health professionals, said Turkish Medical Associations (TTB) on Sunday.

All non-emergency services will be halted in the hospitals around the country, and the doctors will not commute to work, according to a statement from the TTB.

The statement was made as a Turkish doctor was killed recently by his patient's relative. On Friday, Dr. Kamil Furtun, a thoracic surgeon, was killed in a hospital in northern province of Samsun by a 30-year-old man who lost his relative operated by Furtun.

During the past one year, the number of violent incidents against the doctors exceeded 11,000 in Turkey, TTB said, arguing that violence against doctors has come to an unacceptable point.

TTB asked the government to enact necessary laws and regulations to end the violence against medical staff, appealing the citizens to visit the hospitals on Monday not for the medical examination but to show their solidarity with the health professionals.

In Turkey, around 1.5 million people go to public hospitals to get health services per day, while doctors are obliged to examine around 75 patients daily. Endit
