Seoul shares ended higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 3. 39 points, or 0.16 percent, to 2,110.89 at the close. Trading volume stood at 410.7 million shares worth 6.74 trillion won (6.1 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo shares ended higher on Thursday with its benchmark Nikkei stocks index marked its first 10-day winning for the first time since 1988 on the yen's further depreciation and upbeat U.S. and European markets' overnight performances.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 78.88 points, or 0.39 percent, from Wednesday at 20,551.46.

The turnover was about 3,263.9 billion yen (about 26.30 billion U.S. dollars).

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's share prices closed higher Thursday with the weighted index up 19.3 points, or 0.19 percent, to close at 9,712. 84, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 112.65 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.67 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 1.23 percent lower on Thursday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 93. 67 points to 7,505.03. The all-share index went down by 42.40 points, or 0.97 percent, to 4,324.79.

Trading volume reached 1.15 billion shares worth 7.81 billion pesos (174.62 million U.S. dollars).

SHANGHAI -- Chinese shares plummeted on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index diving 6.5 percent to finish at 4,620.27 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index plunged by 6.19 percent to close at 15,912.95 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks fell 626.9 points, or 2.23 percent, to close on Thursday at 27,454.31 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,242.11 and 28, 162.25. Turnover totaled 206.05 billion HK dollars (26.59 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- Australian shares closed down from a bumpy trade after official data showed investment hit a five-and-a-half-year- low.

The benchmark ASX/S&P 200 was down 0.21 percent to 5713.1 points with the broader All Ordinaries index down 0.17 percent to 5714.6 points.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 572.97 points on Thursday, up 6.49 points, or 1.15 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 151.798 million shares worth 2.315 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (106.83 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 149 stocks went up, 72 stocks fell down, while 65 stocks remained unchanged.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Thursday down 0. 78 percent against the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index decreased by 10.93 points to 1,382.97. A total of 48,752 shares worth about 337 million Lao kip (about 42,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 83.65 points on Thursday, up 1.93 points, or 2.36 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 71.937 million shares worth 780.820 billion Vietnamese dong (36.15 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Thursday, an increase of 42.96 percent in volume and 39.6 percent in value against the previous trading session.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 7.17 points, or 0.21 percent, to close at 3,417.77.

A total of 1.88 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 11 billion Singapore dollars (821.8 million U.S. dollars).

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Thursday at 4,544.71 points, down 71.41 points or about 1. 55 percent from Wednesday's finish.

Among a total of 314 issues traded, 71 registered gains and 217 occurred losses while 26 remained unchanged.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 15.99 points, or 0. 30 percent, to a level of 5,237.40 on Thursday.

Some 230,533 transactions were booked, involving 5.13 billion shares worth 4.79 trillion rupiah (about 362.63 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended mixed here on Thursday. The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,755.56 up 0.51 of a point or 0.03 percent, and the Emas was at 12,134.11 down 9.37 points or 0.08 percent.

Turnover declined to 1.62 billion shares valued at 1.90 billion ringgit Malaysia(521.55 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.78 billion shares valued at 2.19 billion ringgit Malaysia(601.81 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday.

MUMBAI -- Indian stocks ended a volatile day in red on Thursday after Chinese stocks took a sudden plunge.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 27,506.71, 57.95 points or 0.21 percent down from the previous close of 27,564.66.
