Kenya faces challenge in volleyball Africa Nations Cup

Xinhua, May 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Kenya faces a daunting task in its bid to claim the women's volleyball World Cup ticket, with eight countries bidding for the single slot reserved for Africa in the qualifier tournament on June 10 in Nairobi.

Nairobi will play host to the Africa Nations Cup, where Kenya will come up against three times winners Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Botswana, Cameroon, Mauritius and Senegal. The winner will get the chance to compete at the World Cup in Japan in August.

Kenya Volleyball Federation Secretary General Evans Wasike said they might get more teams, as Egypt, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia are yet to confirm their participation.

"We have eight teams confirmed for the Africa nations Cup. But the other four have shown interest but are yet to send in their formal confirmation," said Wasike.

Kenya team, which is training in Nairobi, has already named its final 14-member squad.

Kenya, who have already qualified for the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville this September, have won the African Volleyball Championship a record eight times. Endite
