Portugal expects to receive 10 mln euros to take in refugees

Xinhua, May 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Portugal can expect to receive around 10 million euros from Brussels for taking in over 1,700 asylum seekers from Eritrea and Syria in the next two years, local media reported on Wednesday.

The EU has said it will spend around 240 million euros to relocate around 40,000 asylum seekers across Europe, offering member states 6,000 euros per refugee.

The funds are distributed according to each member state's GDP, population, unemployment rate and asylum seekers already taken in.

Portugal is expected to receive up to 2,400 refugees until 2017.

According to Eurostat, Portugal only accepted 40 out of 155 asylum seekers in 2014. Endit
