Austrian tourism industry sees record winter season

Xinhua, May 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Austrian tourism industry had a record number of both visitors and overnight stays for the 2014/2015 winter season, Statistics Austria stated in preliminary figures released Wednesday.

The figures, recorded from November 2014 to April 2015, show a 3.5 percent increase in the number of visitors to a record total of 17.47 million, while the number of overnight stays increased 2.1 percent to 65.81 million.

The number of foreign guests increased 4 percent to 12.24 million, and domestic tourists also increased 2.2 percent to 5.23 million, the overnight stays for both groups also increasing.

The highest number of overnight stays was recorded for the month of February, while the lowest was in March, where minus figures were recorded compared to 2014.

Russian visitor numbers recorded a notable decline of 34 percent over the season, largely due to a weaker ruble and economic sanctions, while increases were recorded in visitors from the most important tourist source countries Germany (3.4 percent) and The Netherlands (2 percent).

Other notable increases were recorded in visitors from Britain (5.6 percent), Switzerland and Liechtenstein (5.1 percent), Poland (7.3 percent) and Italy (6.7 percent). Endit
