Goulart's double helps Guangzhou Evergrande move to the last 8 of AFC Champions League

Xinhua, May 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Goulart Pereira's brace gifted Guangzhou Evergrande a berth in the quarterfinals as Guangzhou erased the 1-2 first leg deficit and knocked out South Korea's Seongnam FC 3-2 on aggregate in the the AFC Champions League on Wednesday.

A draw would secure Seongnam a spot in the last 8 after they edged past Guangzhou by a last gasp winner from the penalty spot one week ago.

Guangzhou's defender Zhang Linpeng was substituted by Rong Hao due to injury just 5 minutes into the game.

Goulart broke the deadlock as the Brazilian striker converted a penalty kick after Huang Bowen's long range shot was blocked by Kwak Hae-seong's arm inside the box.

Seongnam's captain Kim Do-heon's shot in the 39th minute forced Zeng Cheng to make a fine save.

Seongnam strengthened its attack in the second half, Kim Do-heon's inswinging corner hit the near post just 4 minutes after the break.

Ricardo Bueno's goal was disallowed for offside before Guangzhou extended their lead as Goulart's header from Zheng Long's corner beat Seongnam goalkeeper again in the 57th minute.

Kim Do-heon tried his luck from long-range and saw his rasping shot whistle past the post.

Seongnam's last chance was shattered by Zeng Cheng as Lim Chai-min's shot in the box was denied by Zeng Cheng's leg in the stoppage time.

Guangzhou Evergrande becomes the only team from CSL in the last 8 of AFC Champions League this season and it is Guangzhou's fourth consecutive time to move into the quarterfinals of the tournament. Endi
