Thailand likely to hold new election in next September: PM

Xinhua, May 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thailand is likely to have a new general election in September 2016 if the draft constitution survives a referendum, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Wednesday

Prayut made the remarks while meeting with 12 diplomats from the United Nations at the Government House in Bangkok, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand.

The premier, who staged the coup about a year ago, conveyed to the envoys his intention to restore democracy in Thailand. These envoys were invited to the kingdom as part of a campaign organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to get support from foreign countries.

The Thai cabinet and the coup-making National Council for Peace and Order have recently agreed to amend the 2014 interim charter in order for a national referendum to be held on the draft of the new constitution.

If the draft charter is endorsed by the National Reform Council on Aug. 6, it will likely be put to a referendum around January next year. Endi
