6 out of 10 Belgian criminals reoffends: statistics

Xinhua, May 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nearly six out of ten people convicted of a crime in Belgium reoffend, according to new statistics released by the country's National Institute for Criminalistics and Criminology (NICC) on Tuesday.

According to the research, 57.6 percent of convicted criminals reoffended at least once during the period from 1995 to 2013.

The study focused on the criminal activity of 136,530 people convicted in Belgium in 1995.

Returning to the sample group 18 years later, the researchers found that 49.3 percent of those who had reoffended had been convicted of a first offence. Seventy-two percent reoffended within five years of being released from prison.

The average recurrence rate between the convicted person's release date and first recurrence was just over two years.

Traffic offences accounted for nearly 80 percent of reoffences, with those convicted of offences relating to narcotics, drunkenness, and robbery also showing high levels of reoffending.

In addition, the study noted that 12.2 percent of the sample group died during the observation period, with half of them being younger than 56 years old.

This study is the first of its kind in Belgium, which until now was the one of the only countries in Europe, along with Luxembourg, not to record statistics related to reoffending. Endit
