Immigrants from the southern Chinese province of Zhejiang formed an association here on Sunday in an effort to unite local Chinese communities and boost interaction with their hometown.
About 600 representatives from the Chinese Consulate General in Houston and local Chinese and other communities witnessed the founding of the Zhejiang Association of Southern U.S.A, the largest of its kind in the southern United States.
The organization strives to help unite local Chinese communities and strengthen its cooperation with Zhejiang Province and with China in general.
In his speech, Wang Jun, the association's president, urged all members to work together for better ties between China and the United States, which will benefit overseas Chinese, including those from Zhejiang Province.
A stronger and more prosperous China will help overseas Chinese enjoy a better life and a higher social status, he added.
Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States, is now home to some 250,000 Chinese immigrants, most of whom are from the Chinese mainland and well-educated.
They are playing a bigger role in local development and can serve as a bridge to further promote understanding and cooperation between the two countries. Endi
