1 killed, 2 wounded in militant attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, May 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

One person was killed and two others wounded on Monday after militants attacked a cellular phone company office in restive Indian- controlled Kashmir, police said.

The attack occurred in volatile Sopore town of Baramulla district, about 52 km northwest of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today militants fired upon employees inside a franchise office of state owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited here resulting in wounding three people there," a police official said. "All the wounded were immediately rushed to hospitals in Srinagar."

On Saturday night, militants attacked two cellular phone towers in the town with grenades. However, no damage was reported in the attack.

Militants had asked the cellular phone companies to close down their operations in the area and issued threats to the employees.

Reports said militants had fixed devices atop mobile phone towers for their communication, which went missing.

Militants suspected the devices had been handed over to police by employees of cellular phone companies.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attack.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989. Endi
